The World Obesity Federation asserts that obesity is a “chronic, relapsing disease.” This is an important and controversial distinction, because treatment of obesity as a chronic disease is very different from the treatment of obesity as the result of personal choice or lack of willpower.
This categorization as a chronic disease would remove the stigma and feelings of blame and shame associated with obesity, while allowing for a greater focus on treatment. If obesity can be viewed as a medical condition, it also allows for the possibility that treating obesity as a chronic disease successfully means that many of the other diseases associated with obesity could also be treated or eliminated.
Bailey Freed Wellness treats obesity as a medical condition, and as your weight loss healthcare provider, I look at more than just your Body Mass Index (BMI). We look at the full spectrum of possible risk factors and health conditions that may have led to the weight gain. I then take a comprehensive medical approach, incorporating appropriate medications into a practice of patient education and healthy lifestyle modifications.
